The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles has been canceled. Industry experts now fear a complete end to the games fair.

After big companies like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Ubisoft had canceled their participation, the video game fair E3 in The Angels was canceled again. E3 has not taken place in recent years due to the corona pandemic.

“There was interest among exhibitors, industry players, the media, and certainly also among fans,” said Entertainment Software Association (ESA) President Stanley Pierre-Louis in an interview with gamesindustry.biz. Ultimately, however, there have been challenges that have proved too great to overcome.

According to Pierre-Louis, this includes the fact that the economic situation has caused companies to reconsider their investments in large marketing events. In addition, the company’s game development schedule has changed due to the corona pandemic.

The ESA President avoided the question of whether the E3 would take place again next year.

Is E3 coming back next year?

The well-known US game editor Jay Peters suspects in an article for the tech magazine “The Verge” that the game industry has changed so much that the E3 will not come back.

During the pandemic, manufacturers developed their concepts to present their products. Microsoft and Sony would have launched their new consoles without the E3.

Last year, E3 was only supposed to take place digitally but was later also completely canceled.

This year, the video game fair should take place between June 13th and 16th, 2023 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The E3 was held for the first time in 1995 and developed into one of the most important game fairs alongside the Tokyo Games Show and Gamescom in Cologne.
