The Liverpudlian was on the receiving end of a huge left hook from Kamaru Usman which sent him crashing to the canvas, but he got up quickly and landed a couple of punches before getting taken down again.
Edwards then spent most of the remainder of the round on his backside as Usman landed some heavy blows from top position, but he managed to escape and keep control of his opponent’s back.
The fight went into overtime when Edwards managed to get in some time on top, but Usman was able to avoid a submission attempt and force Edwards back into action with more punches.

In that round, Usman seemed to be landing more of his punches but he wasn’t doing anything with them. He was just swinging wildly and missing. He got tired in the fourth round after fighting off a takedown attempt by Edwards who had him against the fence. The fifth round saw Usman continue to throw heavy punches while landing none of them. In that round, Edwards started to land some hard punches on Usman’s chin which seemed to distract him enough for him not to throw so many wild punches as he did in earlier rounds. Edwards, a Scottish fighter who had a record of 10-1 entering the fight, was an underdog against Usman, a Nigerian who holds an impressive record of 14-1 with his last loss coming against Conor McGregor.
But Edwards rolled up on Usman and finished him with a right hand that sent Usman to the mat and forced referee Marc Goddard to stop the bout at 2:49 into Round 1.
